Institute of Certified Public Accountants Issues 400th License

Institute of Certified Public Accountants Issues 400th License to Member Firm Numbers of Firms Continue to Grow despite Economic Downturn The Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland has granted a licence to practice to their 400th member firm and are reporting continuing positive growth figures despite the prevailing economic gloom.

The recipient of the 400th CPA licence is Barry Coffey, Principal Partner of Limerick Accounting Services. Established in 1975, the firm is city based and specialises in providing financial and strategic advice to local family run businesses. President of the CPA, Norman J. Adams, commented,

“Despite reports purporting a decline in the number of starts ups in this sector, the CPA license is proving to be more popular than ever. Applications to practice have in fact increased when compared to the same period in 2007. Similarly, the amount of licenses granted last year represented a 33% increase on the figure for 2006. It would be presumptuous to assume that the accountancy profession will continue to resist a downturn in the economy, but despite the current climate we are delighted to report ongoing growth, and are hopeful that this trend will continue into the second half of the year.”

Barry Coffey, Limerick Accounting Services, commented, “Our business has been in existence for over 30 years and the experience gained over that time has given us a unique insight into what makes business successful. There’s no doubt that the current operating environment is challenging for business. Now more than ever business owners need to develop a good working partnership with their accountant to support ongoing business development plans.” With an increase of 9% in 2007, the CPA had the fastest growing membership among Irish accountancy bodies, according to the Annual Report of the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority (IASSA). The average growth rates across all accountancy bodies stands at 6%.
